This isn’t the end of a typical year; it’s the end of a decade! It’s time to refocus and retune your life- your career, your style, your family, your goals, your skin! But it can be hard to move on if there are a lot of things still clogging your path- or your pores.
Now is the time to donate all the old things you haven’t worn in years. It’s time to recycle the incomplete craft projects you have been meaning to finish. Go ahead and compost that “herb garden” that you never properly potted; you know what we’re talking about – that one time you stuck a few sprigs of green onions in a mason jar of water or that stump of lettuce you thought would grow into a full salad next month. Now that another decade of life has gone by, it’s time to re-think your skincare as well, starting with your beauty shelf!
We know how easy it is to collect a lot of products and samples over the years with the intention of “saving” them for the right occasion. Sometimes you keep things to use again because the skin can be moody, causing you to switch between products every other month. Sometimes it is a seasonal thing – Summer Skin and Winter Skin are completely different beasts. Either way, the result is a vanity full of random potions and lotions that you can’t even remember how to use because it’s been so long. This means it is time to Kon-Mari that shelf! Throw out everything that is expired, that you haven’t opened or that you don’t remember the last time it was used; and keep only the essentials that have worked for you this past year.
Sometimes, your skin can change drastically and cause you to shift your entire routine. Take pregnancy for example. This major life event can create a skincare journey that is quite messy and frustrating, especially when your favorite products that worked for years suddenly sensitize your skin and cause breakouts. You may have to test different products to find the perfect balance while sorting for things that aren’t harmful to you or the life inside of you. Part of the journey was also going through a skin purge and letting your skin settle into its new self. This is especially true during the post partum phase; your skin changes so much! But view this time as the opportunity to target the new issues and select products especially curated by ingredient and effect. For our Founder, Kristin, she streamlined her facial routine to the Flora cleansing Grains, Nourish Facial Oil, and Sea Matcha Face Mask and the Sweet Grapefruit Sugar Scrub and Serenity Body Butter for her body care routine. Finding the right products will certainly ease your skincare journey.
Clearing all the junk out of your skin and off the shelf is therapeutic, and it is something every skincare afficionado needs to experience. It paves the way for great skin and a lovely, organized beauty shelf. 2020 is going to be more of this: all about simplifying and consolidating our lifestyles and our skincare routines. Strive to do more things with less products. Not only is this better for making time for the things you love to do, it’s better for the environment. Less products means less packaging and a smaller carbon footprint!
It can be tricky to make a switch, but it’s always better for you and for the environment to transition to all-natural skincare. For some people, it is as much about the wasteful brand name packaging as it is about the over-marketed chemical pseudonyms inside. I instantly think of the fancy-packaged body creams that tout a hefty price tag and claim to include “miracle oils” as their ingredients. When in reality, it’s how they charge $300 for a jar of product that only has $35 worth of ingredients mostly comprising of mineral oil. For people like myself, it is about using products that are more in tune with my body and my skin—the way nature intended. It’s easy enough to rid your beauty shelf of over-processed and chemically complicated products, but what about your face?
Let’s talk about Skin Purging.
Skin purging is a treatment routine that physically resets your skin by reducing fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, acne, and refining your skin texture and pore size. New skin cells regenerate and, dead skin is sloughed away; all the sebum, oil, and dirt built up in your pores is pushed out to the surface. What you are left with is literally a beautiful new face—albeit the process is not very pretty. All that stuff getting pushed out of your pores? It will look like a massive breakout. There might be peeling or flaky skin, but the good news is that it will heal faster, and the breakouts and dry spots should only be in your typical break out zones. If you have adverse reactions like redness, inflammation, severe dryness or acne on your face where your normally do not, then it is more likely an ingredient in the exfoliant is not working for you. A skin purge is caused by using an exfoliant like a retinoid, acid, or peel that forces your skin to regenerate and renew faster. But if you have sensitive skin or have had an adverse reaction to active ingredients or harsh chemicals in the past, it is better to switch to a more physical exfoliation method using clay-based masks and gentle cleansers.
Our Sea Matcha Mask and our Flora Cleansing Grains are particularly great for a purge – they are both devoid of harsh active ingredients and fillers. Compared to our other masks, the Sea Matcha Mask is formulated to detox your skin with algae-derived vitamins A & C while providing essential amino acids to aid collagen production and elasticity. The matcha green tea in it pulls excess sebum away to purify pores and rebalance the skin’s natural pH. If you follow that up with our Nourish Facial Oil during the day and Renewal Night Cream at night, you will have a great all-natural skin purge treatment on your hands.*
The typical skin regeneration cycle is every 27 days. Yes, that means everyone has new skin, all over their body, every 27 days! You may see results in as little as 2 weeks or the purge process could take as long as 6 weeks. You need to give your skin time to adjust and start working with new products. It’s not an instant miracle-in-a-jar. You won’t see a sudden difference like you do when applying concealer and foundation; but you will notice gradually that your hyperpigmentation will lighten, your pores will appear smaller, and your face will feel firmer. It’s like pruning a plant to guide its growth—you will see the difference over time. Why not make 2020 the year you perfect your skin?
*If you have specific skin conditions, please talk to a dermatologist for specialized care before using any new products or committing to a new routine!
It’s time to make things, bake things, and take a long-deserved break from things! As the weather turns colder and darker, I love to do small things to brighten and lighten the mood. Everyone thinks this season is all about baking – and it is! Don’t get me wrong, I love a fresh baked cookie or a warm loaf of bread straight from the oven, but above all, this season is about scents. Scent plays such a strong role in our memory and emotions; I bet every memory you have of Fall has a scent attached to it. You can probably recall it more vividly than any image in your mind.
A steaming cup of cinnamon spiced apple cider. Melted chocolate and burnt sugar from chocolate chip cookies baking away. Roasting nuts. Coffee brewing. The musk of fallen leaves crunching beneath your feet. The subtle smoky tinge on the brisk Autumn air. Or maybe just that pumpkin spice latte that has become an annual American ritual ushering in the change of seasons.
We know that there’s something essential about these small indulgences and how they lift our spirits. So, we have applied that same philosophy to our products, specifically to how you experience them. We’ve used essential oils to not just create a picture but to evoke a feeling through them.
Our Serenity Body Butter is the perfect example. Shea and mango butter combine with apricot kernel oil to soothe and condition the skin. The formulated blend of essential oils induces a feeling of peace and focus while softening the skin. Use it the next time you need to loosen that knot of tension on the back of your neck!
Essential oils are an underrated indulgence. Most people only associate essential oils with aromatherapy through scented candles and oil diffusers. With our products, there is no need for any other tool or a wait time to start enjoying the effects. We offer a myriad of sugar scrubs for the body that have their own blend of essential oils that provide a unique and therapeutic experience. When you get into that steamy bath or shower with one of them and start scrubbing, the essential oils are immediately released onto your skin and into the air. Carried by the steam to fill your space as they clear your head, the luscious scents will literally pull you into a different world!
My favorite for relaxing from a stressful day is the classic Lavender Vanilla Sugar Scrub. Lavender sometimes reads as soapy or medicinal to some people, but we use real lavender essential oil and real vanilla extract to create a sweet and therapeutic blend. These two scent profiles dance with each other to create a perfect zone of zen. Not only is lavender relaxing through its aroma, it is also effective as a muscle relaxer, to soothe joint pains and strains after a long day.
We all know what long days are coming up this week! Whether you spend the next few days baking for family and friends on Thanksgiving or organizing an elite force to storm the shops on Black Friday, there’s always time for a little essential indulgence!
Whether you’re hopping aboard a train, jumping on to a plane, or getting ready for a day-long road trip; it’s hard to maintain your skincare routine and give yourself the attention you need. Sometimes it’s packing limitations, and sometimes it’s simply not enough time on a tight travel schedule. As much as we love taking shelfies we know we can’t take all of our precious lotions and potions with us when we’re traveling. So what’s a skincare addict to do when one has to live out of a carry-on?
Pamper. Pack. & Preserve.
This might sound counterintuitive but trust us, pamper yourself BEFORE your trip. Exfoliate, enrich, and relax so you are rejuvenated, energized, and glowing as you embark. When your skin and hair are extra saturated with nutrients, they are able to sustain their healthy texture and suppleness a few days without too much attention.
If you’ve read our previous blog about Seasonal Skincare, then you're familiar with a multi-step skincare regimen where you layer products to be more effective. We’re tweaking it here for travel by essentially pregaming our skin for the long haul. Once you’ve pampered yourself the night before departure, it’s time to pack! No, I don’t mean your suitcase - pack on water-based serums, toners, or lightweight moisturizers. Make sure to allow each layer to absorb before applying the next. Follow those layers with an overnight cream or sleep mask. For your body, follow a similar change post-exfoliation by using a lightweight moisturizer first, then massaging on a body butter.
It may seem excessive at first, especially if you have oily skin or don’t like the feeling of extra product on your body, but this is an overnight ritual to essentially bring your skin to 110%. You’re going to need that extra love to help preserve your skin and hair moisture balance throughout your trip. It’s no joke; travel can be harsh on our body’s largest organ. The variety of environments, the stress of travel, the lack of humidity in pressurized cabins, all can cause issues, especially for those of us with sensitive skin. In most cases, the biggest issue is dryness- both inside and out.
Throughout your travels, preserve your hair and skin with minimal upkeep. Keep a mini size of our body butter and facial oil on hand and apply a little every night, every morning, or whenever you need it! Preservation is not a one and done job, by no means! This tiny touch of emollients on the regular will help the effects of your pre-trip pamper session make it through the long haul...or at least through your obligatory family dinner!
What is your greatest fear? Mine is that my children will grow up without the beauty of snowcapped peaks and crystal-clear lakes, but rather mountains of trash and seas of garbage.
Here at Earth-Kissed Beauty, we love our Earth and everything it gives us! As we use curated, natural ingredients to create our products, it’s just as important to us how you receive them. As a company, we’re proud to swim against the current of packaging that ends up in landfills and oceans. We scoured through the catalogs to find the right containers that not only represent who we are but what we care about. Our plastic bottles and jars are made of PET while our vials are made from glass. Not only are these containers easy to recycle, but even better when upcycled!
PET isn’t as hard to find as you think, you’ve probably got an abundance of it in your fridge or in your closet. Polyethylene terephthalate is one of the most common and easiest to recycle plastics in the world. In fact, you could melt and repurpose it right in your oven – like this guy who melted PET caps from milk jugs into a salad bowl! It can be clear like a bottle of water or it can be opaque, like our Cranberry Pomegranate Hair & Body Oil bottle. In our case, the dark color of the plastic helps block out light from hitting the product inside and saving it from degradation.
Glass, another clean and recyclable material, is easy to find on our shelves. We use it to store our facial oils. When you finally hit the bottom of the vial, you could toss it in your recycling bin, but there’s an even better option: Upcycling! Our lovely little glass vials are perfect for storing so many things and are ready to live another life beyond the bin! Insert string LED lights for a colorful light fixture. Add a little water and turn them into a sweet mini vase for a few sprigs of wildflowers or fresh herbs. Or simply use them to hold little odds and ends for your next craft project.
Our Body Butters and Face Masks come in wide shallow PET jars that are just begging to be repurposed! For the clear jars, attach a battery powered LED to the inside of the lid, screw back on, and flip over for a soft, diffused night light. Turn the wider body butter jars into a mini succulent filled fairy garden. Save up a set of 4 to turn into wheels for your kids’ next physics project.
Honestly, the possibilities for our packaging are endless but our Earth is not. Here’s our friendly reminder to think beyond the bin next time you finish up a jar of your favorite body butter!
It’s officially Autumn when you start digging through your closet to unearth your favorite sweater. And if you’re in North Carolina like me, you’ll probably only wear it for 2 hours before it feels like Summer again! Just like it’s time to pull on an extra layer to stay warm, we need to add on those extra layers of moisture and hydration. Making seasonal changes to skincare routines is essential to maintain a happy complexion. While the needs of every skin type are different, these simple rules of thumb can help upgrade any routine for a colder and dryer season.
First rule of thumb--Level up products!
Whatever moisturizer you are using right now, level it up to something richer. For example, if you use a body oil, try indulging in a body butter. The richer feel of the butter means it absorbs slower and creates a longer lasting barrier on your skin to help trap moisture. If you’re using a lightweight or water-based lotion, upgrade to a body oil. It’s the same principle.
Second rule of thumb--Wear an extra layer!
If you have a simple 2 step routine where you cleanse then moisturize, you need to apply a fast absorbing moisturizer in between. Try adding facial oil, a moisturizing toner, or serum. Make sure to give it a few minutes to absorb into your skin before putting your regular moisturizer on to seal it. This step ensures your skin has a little extra hydration to get it through the next chilly day or super dry office.
Third rule of thumb--Renewal!
All those rich products and hydration are meant to protect the skin and keep it from becoming dry and flaky. Sometimes this process traps the dead skin and dirt in place, and you need a little help to remove it—that’s when exfoliating sugar scrubs and clay-based face masks come into play!
Body and face scrubs help slough away the dead skin and invigorate as they do; increasing circulation, evening out texture, and kickstarting the renewal process so your skin is ready to drink in whatever you put on it next. At this point, you could put on your regular body oil or moisturizer and bask in your own glow for the night, but why not give your face a little extra love? This is the perfect and most effective time to apply our Renewal Night Cream! Daylight savings? I don’t know her - cuz you’re the sun now, baby!
Depending on your skin needs, you may only need to do a Renewal step 1 to 3 nights a week, but no more than that, as you’ll interrupt the healing process and may compromise your skin barrier instead. This happens a lot when people discover a scrub or mask they love; they love the feeling of fresh skin and the glow after, but end up over-exfoliating by doing it too often without realizing that exfoliation is just half of the renewal process, the other half is healing time!
Whatever skincare routine changes you decide to go for this season, just remember, consistency is key! We all have those days when our hormones are off, stress is high, or we’re pulling all-nighters; but that is not an excuse to ignore your body and its biggest organ. Don’t give up on your skin, be kind to it, and it will love you back! Happy Fall!
A few months ago, we held our first styled photoshoot. The goal was to have professional images to revamp our website and spruce up our social media pages. By now, you’ve probably seen those dreamy face mask pictures and envisioned yourself using our scrumptious sugar scrubs. We wanted to share some images and details from behind the scenes of our inaugural shoot.
As you know, Earth-Kissed Beauty is a small business that’s woman and minority owned. We believe in collaboration and community and sought to utilize vendors with similar structures and missions as us. We are proud to share that each vendor we used for our shoot was minority-owned or woman-owned!
Major thanks to our shoot coordinator, Keys Events, LLC; photographer, Megan Morales Photography; makeup artist, Mena Garcia Beauty; clothing stylist, Flourish Market; venue, Leslie-Alford-Mims House.
We used a friend and local bloggers as our models. Be sure to check out Shabby Chic + Cheap and The Coffee Table.
Kristin, owner of Earth-Kissed Beauty, hardly wears makeup and was excited to be dolled up. Mena did a phenomenal job with enhancing Kristin’s natural beauty and making her feel comfortable with a full face of makeup (hello lashes!). The Flourish Market generously provided the clothing for the shoot. How cute is Kristin’s top?
Our vision for this shoot was a Girls Night In: a fun home spa experience with your girlfriends. Monique with Keys Events understood every piece of our dream and made it a reality. Megan, our photographer understood our vision and captured key shots of our products and was able to highlight our models’ personalities during their shoot.
The Flourish Market also provided the tops for our models; it nicely tied in with our Girls Night In theme!
We were able to utilize several areas of the historic Mims House including the beautiful heart wall and en suite.
Our mission at Earth-Kissed Beauty is to make clean skincare available to everyone. We sought to emphasize that with Kristin’s shoot. Megan captured Kristin’s natural, down-to-Earth style and her love of crafting these amazing skincare products.
Overall, our styled shoot was a huge success. Laughter was ringing throughout the venue and smiles were genuine.
We look forward to our next shoot! Do you have any guesses on what our next theme will be? Share in the comments below!
Just like our clean skincare, we like to keep things simple around here. Check out this vlog from our founder, Kristin, on her quick and simple morning facial routine!

We live in a world where society feeds on buzzwords and hot topics. "Toxic" was the 2018 Word of the Year, and phrases like "vegan skincare" and "green beauty" are thrown around like confetti. While these words and phrases are catchy, they certainly hold more meaning than being the hashtag for a social media blogger's 30th selfie of the week.
Let's break down the hype behind clean skincare. In the United States, there is the Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act that enforces regulations on what food, cosmetic and personal care companies can and cannot use in their products. The law was enacted in 1938, before the rise of plastics and chemical industries became the standard for creating and preserving foods and personal care products.
The law has yet to be updated, and has given large liberties to personal care companies in manufacturing their products. It's why you see sodium laurel sulfate, EDTA, propylene glycol, and methylparaben listed as ingredients in a simple face cleanser. Numerous research studies have shown these chemicals to be related to many adverse health reactions such as skin irritation, hormone disruption and imbalance, and cancer.
Despite the numerous studies, the law has not been updated to provide a standard amongst the personal care industry to protect their consumers. Conversely, large brand companies have altered their product labeling to highlight "natural" and "plant derived" ingredients, but upon reading the label, these ingredients that are plant derived are chemically extracted, thus removing all natural benefits and are added to the existing chemical-filled products.
Clean skincare is a movement to provide personal care products made without ingredients known to cause harm to consumers. Clean skincare and beauty brands will not include harsh chemicals, synthetic fillers and dyes and aim to be environmentally friendly.
Earth-Kissed Beauty's entire line of products are clean, safe, and cruelty free. There are zero chemicals, synthetic fragrances, or preservatives in our products. Each product is made with natural and organic botanicals--ingredients you can name (shea butter, jojoba oil, hibiscus flower, frankincense essential oil). Our products are environmentally friendly and are placed in recyclable PET containers or glass. We wanted to change the narrative and give consumers peace of mind with shopping personal care products.
We are on a mission to provide clean, safe skincare to everyone. Shop our line of clean skincare and get ready to love your earth-kissed skin.
